"DIVISION" on Vinyl
“DIVISION”

Division explores the intersections of art, music, mathematics, and quantum physics through material symbolism and spatial logic. The work is constructed from vinyl records arranged in a configuration that mirrors the mathematical division symbol, while subtly revealing the presence of additional operators—addition, subtraction, and multiplication—embedded within the composition and activated through close viewing.
Each vinyl record functions as both medium and metaphor. Opposing records reflect one another chromatically, creating a system of visual dualities: yellow punctuated with purple splatter faces purple disrupted by yellow; pink and green are similarly inverted. These mirrored pairings suggest balance, opposition, and reciprocity—forces that echo both musical harmony and physical laws.
At the center of the composition, a vinyl record divided evenly between black and metallic silver anchors the work. This duality is extended to the canvas itself, which is likewise split between black and silver fields. Metallic silver splatter permeates every record, unifying the composition while evoking reflection, resonance, and energy in motion. Black operates as a metaphor for the unknown—the vast darkness of the cosmos and phenomena such as black holes—while silver signifies reflection, perception, and the observable universe.
Drawing from principles of quantum physics, DIVISION reflects the belief that control does not arise through dominance, but through submission and alignment with universal forces. The work proposes that structure and chaos, darkness and reflection, opposition and unity are not contradictions, but interconnected states within a larger system. Through repetition, symmetry, and material choice, the piece invites viewers to consider their place within these systems—and the quiet power that emerges when one learns to move with them rather than against them.
